さようなら Spring 2008!
This marks the end of my Japanese journal for Spring 2008. I thoroughly enjoyed this method of independent learning and I look forward to more posts on this blog in the Fall of 2008. Have a great summer everyone!
When my family went on vacation last year, my father bit into some candy and broke his tooth, causing an emergency trip to the dentist. If this ever happened in Japan, the following phrases would be particularly useful.
は が いたみ ます。
I have a toothache.
この は が いたみ ます。
This tooth hurts.
つめもの/は が とれ ました。
I’ve lost a filling/tooth.
この いれば を なおせ ますか。
Can you repair this denture?
ぬかないで ください。
I don’t want it extracted.
The following phrases deal with inquiries about tours you may want to take if you visit Japan.
その ツアー は いくら です か。
How much does the tour cost?
ちゅうしょく つき です か。
Is lunch included?
どこ から でます か。
Where do we leave from?
なんじ に しゅっぱつ しますか。
What time does the tour start?
なんじ に もどり ます か。
What time do we get back?
____ で じゆう じかん は あります か。
Do we have free time in ____?
ええご が できる ガイド は います か。
Is there an English speaking guide?
The following phrases are useful when purchasing your train tickets for some excellent sight-seeing in Japan.
____ いき の きっぷ を ____ で 一枚 下さい。
I’d like a ____ ticket to ____.
片道 （かたみち） one-way
おおふく round trip
グリーン車 first class (green car)
普通車 （ふつうしゃ） second class
割引 （わりびき） concessionary
ざせき を よやく したいん です が。
I’d like to reserve a seat.
通路側の席 （つうろ がわ の せき） aisle seat
窓際の席 （まど ぎわ の せき） window seat
寝台車 わ あります か。
Is there a sleeping car?
Here is a further conversation between the disgruntled customer at Denny’s and the manager.
Customer: この かいけえ は ちがって いる よお です が。 I think there’s a mistake in this bill.
Manager: 何ですか。 What?
Customer: まちがい じゃない です か。 ちゅうもん したの と ちがい ます。 There must be some mistake. That’s not what I ordered.
Manager: ご注文は何でしたか。 What did you order?
Customer: ラーメン わ とりません でした。 注文したのは ハンバーガー です。 I didn’t have ramen, I had a hamburger.
Manager: すみません。 この場合でも、ハンバーガーにお金を払う必要があります。 I’m sorry. You still must pay for the hamburger.
Customer: よし かえり ます。 でも おいしい レストラン を おしえて。 Alright, I’ll pay. But can you recommend a good restaurant around here?
In conclusion: Customer still has to pay full price for the hamburger, so he relectantly agrees but expresses his disgrattitude.
